When refugee women arrive in the U.S., many are eager to learn how to drive but aren’t sure where to start. The first milestone is earning a learner’s permit—and this month, one of our ladies reached that goal!
After weeks of studying the manual, she and her interpreter headed to the Beaverton DMV. I tagged along to help—entertaining a curious 4-year-old and rocking a tired, crying baby while mom took the test. Ninety minutes later, she walked out smiling, learner’s permit in hand.
Now we’ve started driving lessons. We began in a high school parking lot, then moved on to quiet neighborhood streets. Next up: driving 35 mph!
Teaching someone to drive for the first time is an adventure filled with adrenaline, joy, and so much accomplishment. Thank you for partnering with us—it’s like you’re right there in the car, cheering us on every mile of the way.
